Splits or longitudinal tears are found running parallel to the rim along the sidewall. The cracks may appear as a continuous long line or in intermittent segments.
Caused by riding with severely under-inflated tires for a prolonged period. This causes the weight of the vehicle and rider to press down, severely folding and flexing the sidewall while the wheel rotates. As a result, high heat accumulates in the rubber, causing the casing plies and sidewall rubber to experience flex fatigue until they eventually tear apart.
Another cause is severe impact, such as riding into a deep pothole or hitting a curb while the tire pressure is low. The impact causes the sidewall to be crushed between the rim and the external object, splitting the rubber into a long tear.
This type of damage does not occur from the tire structure separating on its own internally, but rather from external factors and usage—specifically, allowing the tire pressure to drop until the structure cannot support the load, or from an accidental impact. It is not caused by material or manufacturing defects; therefore, the product is not covered by the warranty policy.
Tires with sidewall cracks or tears of this nature cannot be repaired under any circumstances. For the maximum safety of the rider, the tire must be replaced with a new one immediately.
